Why I love working with oil colors

 DSCF8125t

I thought about doing a post about my favorite medium. You have probably noticed that I love to paint a lot. I paint because it makes me calm and I love beautiful colors. I will tell you the reasons why I love working with oil medium.

  • First of all. Since oil color is slow-drying paint then it’s perfect for me because I’m a slow painter and I can’t imagine myself painting with acrylic colors. I have painted with acrylics and I remember that the first time when I used them, I sort of had a panic because I wasn’t really aware of how fast they dry.
  • Secondly, oil colors have more pigment in them and it means they have more vivid and richer colors.
  • When it comes to cleaning the brushes. It’s so much easier when I use oil colors. Because with acrylics I would have to clean my brushes very quickly to prevent my brushes to be covered with dried paint.
  • Oil colors blend well with surrounding colors. I love to mix colors! It’s so exciting to use different colors and mix them together.
  • Oil colors also has great textural effects. I personally like when there is a texture in my paintings. It gives the painting 3D effect and painting comes alive.
  • I have noticed that with oils I can enjoy expressive technique.
  • There are a huge color range available. Since I started to paint the ocean series, I have found some colors which are my absolute favorite ones:
  • The fact that I can thin it right down and mix it with so many other mediums and oils. It gives me so much freedom. Although I’m a slow painter, sometimes I like to mix the paint with medium which will speed up oil paint drying time so that I could move on with the painting. You know, sometimes I’m a little bit impatient and that’s when medium helps me out.
  • Oil colors are very forgiving. If I make any mistake I can scrape off and paint over. I remember when I painted tigers. I used acrylics as underpainting layers for my oil painting and I applied the layer and it dried so fast, I wanted to scrape off some of it but I couldn’t because it had dried already. That’s when I knew that I’m a oil paint person.
I know that as much there are different people, there are different opinions about mediums. But this is my favorite medium. What is your favorite medium?

It’s 26th May and I’m sitting in the living room and writing this post about my new series. The sun is shining brightly and I’m full of creative energy. I’m really grateful that I can do what I love the most.
The time really does fly. I can’t believe I have finished 9 paintings already. I haven’t showed these paintings to anyone, besides my family. I’m really excited already to hear what you guys think about my new series.
I will announce the name of my new series by the end of June so stay tuned.

I don’t know about you but I consider myself very curious person. I always like to see the pictures which show how an artwork came together. That’s why I added some pictures of my painting progress. Hope you enjoy!

I hope you had amazing weekend! For the past few months I have been working on my new series which I will launch in August. I miss going to the beach a lot. I love the sun and I love the ocean. Fortunately I don’t have to wait for a long time. It’s already April and I can tell that the weather is getting warmer and warmer every day here in Estonia.

The days are also getting longer and longer which means that my days will be more productive. I can focus more on painting. So far I woke up in the morning and spent all the time for painting, as long as there was enough light for it. I don’t like to paint when I have to use the indoor lights.

Since I won’t show any finished paintings before August, so I thought that I would create the series of blog posts about my work in progress where I will show you the sneak peaks of my work.

I can’t hide my excitement when it comes to using these beautiful blue and green tones. Each time I go to the art shop I totally lost my mind and buy so many colors, even when I don’t really need them all. Haha.

I found very beautiful colors: phthalocyanine blue, turquoise blue, viridian hue.

These are some of the colors that I will use in my new series.

Pure Shores: behind the scenes

Pure shores

I’m so happy that I finished my new painting series Pure Shores. It took me a while to finish it. Painting ocean has been very calming and interesting at the same time. I have received some very positive feedback about my ocean paintings and it moves me deeply. I’m thankful from the bottom of my heart that you like and enjoy what I do.

As you can see I really enjoy drinking tea while I paint. Sometimes I totally lose myself in the painting process and accidentally put my brush in the tea cup. Oops! I try to keep my desk organized ( most of the time), although sometimes I fail.

My favorite part of this painting was to paint the beach waves, I did it by using my painting knife which has lately been one of my favorite tools when it comes to painting ocean. I think I might buy more painting knifes in different sizes to play with. Also I have found some new favorite oil colors.

Ever since I started using Newton & Winsor oil colors, I have started to love them! They have so many beautiful colors and high quality. What more could I possibly want!

The downside of loving oil colors so much is that I want to buy so many colors, even if I don’t need all of them. You know the feeling when you go to the shop with empty stomach and you feel like eating every possible thing that seems delicious. In fact, in my opinion everything seems delicious then.

I like to paint and then take a moment to observe it from the distant to decide whether it needs some more paint or not.
